Link Time: Forgotten New England

Here's a very nicely done blog featuring New England as I feature Boston. There are some Boston entries, including one that covers North Station in more detail than I did recently. Cool stuff - check it out.

Link Time: MIT-Libraries Photostream

I had forgotten about this collection, but I just followed a link to one of its photos. Unfortunately, the owner has decided not to make this images available via Creative Commons, so I can't download a photo and use it here to give you an example. I could have done a screen cap of course, but hey, if they don't wanna share, then so be it.

MIT-Libraries Flickr photostream.

I linked to a series of Scollay Square photos from the 1950s, but feel free to poke around when you get there. There are many pages that I don't find interesting, but you'll have to see what's there for yourself.

Link Time: Medieval Boston

I meant to add a link to this web page a while ago, but it got lost in the bookmarks. This link is to an internet forum thread titled Medieval Boston, which features great photos of Boston street scenes lost to urban renewal during the mid-20th Century. Rather than pinch the photos, I think it's better to send you to the thread and let you read the comments as well.

Link Time: History of Massachusetts

I've just come across a very nice new blog that I want to share with you: History of Massachusetts.

Recent topics: the Salem witch trials, the Mayflower and How Boston Lost It's Hills. Good information, nice graphics and links to references. I encourage you to check it out and say hi to Rebekah.

Link Time: Cinema Treasures

I was going to look at some of the classic cinemas of Boston's past, but there's really no point of doing so when there's an entire site dedicated to remembering old movie houses. Cinema Treasures is the Wikipedia of movie houses, filled with user-supplied information on movie theaters of the past and present. Included (to date) are 106 entries for Boston. You get everything from nostalgic memories of people who attended openings of The Sound of Music and Cleopatra to detailed histories from dedicated devotees, from architects to name changes and old photos. Even if you know nothing about Boston's cinema past, just browsing the list will provide fascinating stories.

The search page includes a City tab - enter Boston in to the search window and get the full list.

Link Time: Shopping Days In Retro Boston

Here's a great site for those who want to know what shopping was like on Washington street before it was 'rebranded' as Downtown Crossing in a sad attempt to turn back the hands of time. Articles, memories, photos and pictures of newspaper advertisements. Very cool visit to Memory Lane.

Link Time - Scollay Square

I was going to do a post on the late, great Scollay Square. I was going to, until I found this fabulous Scollay Square web site. Here's where Boston got turned upside down - and it was within my lifetime, if not in my experience. I can imagine a great college class covering just the evolution - and demise - of Scollay square. The information and photos offered on this site are so great, you could find yourself spending an entire night working through the different pages. Two thumbs up - all I've got - for this fine site.

Link Time: Boston 1775

If you are interested in Boston's role in the Revolutionary period, Boston 1775 is the place to be. J.J. Bell gives you everything you ever wanted to know, and more than you ever imagined existed when it comes to both the buildup to the revolution and the war itself. He does yeoman's work correcting myths and straightening out scrambled stories. He's also a great sources for coming lectures and events covering the same subjects. This is what makes the internet great.

Link Time

I've added a link in the right margin to The City Record and Boston News-Letter blog. If you're interested in Boston history, give it a look. The site is no longer active, but there's lots of interesting information there. In fact, I've had to drop two possible posts because I see that he's already covered the topics. For a start, did you know that Boston once had an Edgar Allen Poe Square?
